The testing method and the sample needed for 204 tests done at Repromed Diagnostic. This page is mainly for doctors, collection centres and patients preparing for a test. Fasting and other preparation are noted where they apply. If you are unsure, call 033 4003 2211 before your test.

ACTH STIMULATION TEST (for CORTISOL)

Method: Chemiluminescent Enzyme Immunoassay

Specimen: 2ml serum for each timed Specimen. All tubes must be clearly marked with time drawn. Submit all tubes with 1 test request form. Draw fasting baseline sample, administer 250 μg of synthetic ACTH (IM/IV), draw additional samples at 30 and 60min or as advised by the physician.

ADRENO-CORTICOTROPIC HORMONE (ACTH) PLASMA

Method: Chemiluminescent Enzyme Immunoassay

Specimen: Collect blood by venipuncture (avoiding hemolysis) into iced EDTA tubes, noting the time of collection. The tubes should be immersed in an Ice bath following Separate the plasma from the cells by centrifugation in a refrigerated centrifuge, then aliquot and freeze immediately in plastic or silanized glass tubes. (Do not use nonsilanized glass.)

AFB CULTURE WITH SENSITIVITY

Specimen: Random sample or 24 hours sample of urine, stool, sputum, pus, swab (any) or any fluid in a sterile plastic capped container or sterile container with preservative. Specify type of specimen on container and test request form. Ship at room temperature.

AFB STAIN, MISCELLANEOUS

Method: Includes Auramine screening followed by Ziehl Neelsen stain confirmation of positives.

Specimen: Miscellaneous specimen (tissue, swab, etc.) in normal saline in a sterile plastic capped container or fluids (peritoneal, pleural, gastric washings, etc.) in a sterile, plastic capped container or smeared onto 4 clean glass slides, fixed immediately in 1:1 ether-alcohol mixture for 30min and air dried. For gastric lavage, the patient should be fasting for the previous 6 hours. Specify the type of specimen on the container and test request form. Ship at room temperature.

AFB STAIN, PUS

Method: Include Auramine screening followed by Ziehl Neelsen stain confirmation of positives.

Specimen: Submit pus in sterile, screw-capped container or 2 heat fixed smears

AFB STAIN, URINE

Method: Include Auramine screening followed by Ziehl Neelsen stain confirmation of positives.

Specimen: Submit first morning urine Specimen in sterile screw capped container. preferably on 3 consecutive days. Ship at room temperature. 24 HOUR URINE SPECIMENS should be avoided as the tubercle bacillus can suffer irreversible injury on prolonged exposure to acids in urine

ALBUMIN, SERUM

Method: Dry Chemistry & Wet chemistry (BCG, Colorimetric)

Specimen: 2mL serum from 1 SST. Overnight fasting is preferred. Ship refrigerated or frozen.

ALDEHYDE CHOPRA TEST FOR KALAAZAR

Method: Formol Gel formation.

Specimen: 2mL serum from 1 SST. Ship refrigerated or frozen.

ALKALINE PHOSPHATE, ALP, AP

Method: Dry Chemistry & Wet Chemistry (PNP-KINETIC)

Specimen: 2mL. Haemolysed specimens are not acceptable. Ship refrigerated or frozen.

ALPHA FETOPROTEIN (AFP), AMNIOTIC FLUID

Method: Chemiluminescent Enzyme Immunoassay

Specimen: 2mL amniotic fluid. Avoid contamination with maternal blood. Specify LMP gestational age (15- 21 weeks) on test request form. Ship refrigerated or frozen

Comment: The test is recommended only between 15-21 weeks of pregnancy.

ALPHA FETOPROTEIN(AFP ), SERUM

Method: Chemiluminescent Enzyme Immunoassay

Specimen: 2ml serum. Maternal date of birth, weight, diabetes status. LMP and gestational age (15-21 weeks) must be provided. Ship refrigerated or frozen.

Comment: The test is recommended only between 14-22 weeks of pregnancy.

Method: Ion selective Electrode/ Photometry

DEXAMETHASONE SUPPRESSION TEST FOR CORTISOL, LOW DOSE

Specimen: 2ml serum from 1 SST. Draw baseline CORTISOL sample at 8-9 a.m on day 1. Administer dexamethasone 0.5 mg orally 6 hourly for 2 days. Draw 2nd Specimen at 8-9 a.m. on day 3. Both containers must be marked with time and date drawn, and submitted with 1 test request form.

Comment: Patient should not be on steroid therapy.

DEXAMETHASONE SUPPRESSION TEST FOR CORTISOL, OVERNIGHT SCREENING

Method: Chemiluminescent Enzyme Immunoassay

Specimen: 2ml serum. Draw baseline CORTISOL sample at 8-9 a.m on day 1. Administer dexamethasone 1mg (20 μg/kg body weight) orally at 11am, same night. Draw 2nd Specimen at 8-9 a.m. on day 2. Both containers must be marked with time and date drawn, and submitted with 1 test request form.

Comment: Patient should not be on steroid therapy.

DIGOXIN (LANOXIN)

Method: Chemiluminescent Enzyme Immunoassay

Specimen: 2ml serum. Do not use gel barrier tubes. Separate serum within 2 hour of collection. Ship refrigerated or frozen. Trough: Just before the next dose is due at steady state. Peak 6-8 hours after dose.

DOWN SYNDROME RISK SCREENING PANEL (TRIPLE SCREENING TEST)

Method: Chemiluminescent Enzyme Immunoassay

Specimen: 2ml serum. Ship refrigerated or frozen. Provide maternal date of birth in day month and year (DOB), LMP, diabetic status and maternal weight in kg. specimen should be collect between 14 and 22 Gestational week.

Note: Includes Alpha-Fetoprotein, HCG total or beta subunit & Estriol unconjugated.

Method: Biurette Modified Latex agglutination

Specimen: 4ml plasma in special tube available from Laboratory 2ml blood in special FDP tube available from Laboratory. Invert gently 8-10 times. Blood will clot.

FLUID EXAMINATION ROUTINE. ASCITIC/PERITONEAL/PERICARDIAL

Method: Biochemistry and microscopy of gram Leishman, Ziehl Neelsen and fluorescent stained smear.

Specimen: 5ml Ascitic / Peritoneal / Pericardial fluid in a sterile plastic container. DO NOT FREEZE

Note: Does not include papanicoloau stain.

FLUID EXAMINATION ROUTINE. SEMEN ANALYSIS, SEMINOGRAM

Method: Microscopy.

Specimen: Freshly voided semen. Four days abstinence is mandatory.

Comment: Does not include Gram, Ziehl Neelsen, Fluorescent or papanicolau stained smears. ut side samples not accepted.

FOLATE / FOLIC ACID, SERUM

Method: Chemiluminescent Enzyme Immunoassay

Specimen: 3ml serum. Ship refrigerated or frozen. Wrap in aluminium foil to protect from light. Overnight fasting is required.

FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE (FSH)

Method: Chemiluminescent Enzyme Immunoassay

Specimen: 2-ml serum. Ship refrigerated or frozen. Specify age, sex and menstrual day (for cycling female) on test request form.

FUNGUS EXAMINATION, ROUTINE KOH PREPARATION

Specimen: Submit skin, nail scrapings, hair (including root) tissue or body fluid. Use culture swab for oral, genital or wound specimens.

GLUCOSE TOLERANCE TEST, 6 SPECIMEN

Method: GOD-PAP (Photometry)/ Strip test & Benedict Qualitative Reductional test.

Specimen: 2ml plasma from (Sodium fluoride) tube and 10ml aliquot of corresponding urine Specimen at 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 & 2.5 hours. Note time drawn on each tube level, urine vial, and on test request form. Specify type of Specimen (Plasma or urine) on each vial. 12-hours overnight fasting essential. Ship refrigerated or frozen.

GLUCOSE, FASTING

Specimen: 2ml plasma from (sodium fluoride) tube. Overnight fasting is essential.

Specimen: 2ml plasma from (Sodium fluoride) tube. 2-hours after a meal.

GLYCOSYLATED HAEMOGLOBIN, HbA1c

Method: Low Pressure Liquid Chromatography (LPLC,)

Specimen: 3ml whole blood in EDTA tube. Transfer into plastic transport container and ship refrigerated. DO NOT FREEZE.

GONADOTROPIN RELEASING HORMONE (GnRH) STIMULATION TEST FOR FSH & LH / (GnRH STIMULATION TEST FOR FSH & LH)

Method: Chemiluminescent Enzyme Immunoassay

Specimen: 2ml serum. Draw fasting baseline Specimen. Administer GnRH 2.5μg/ Kg body weight (100 μg maximum) as IV bolus, draw additional Specimens ( 2ml each) at 30,60,90 & 120 min (or as advised by physician) for FSH and LH. Ship refrigerated or frozen.

GRAM STAIN

Method: Microscopy of Gram stained smears

Specimen: Submit specimens like pus, sputum, body fluid, urine etc. in a sterile container.
