Specimen: Miscellaneous specimen (tissue, swab, etc.) in normal saline in a sterile plastic capped container or fluids (peritoneal, pleural, gastric washings, etc.) in a sterile, plastic capped container or smeared onto 4 clean glass slides, fixed immediately in 1:1 ether-alcohol mixture for 30min and air dried. For gastric lavage, the patient should be fasting for the previous 6 hours. Specify the type of specimen on the container and test request form. Ship at room temperature.
